Must-Haves First

By Travis Wright, REALTOR®, with eXp Realty

Start with a must-have list, not a price; a simple two-list exercise.

Start with your must-have list

Write your must-haves in your own words, and we'll build the search from there.

The quick tip
  • Start with two lists: what the home absolutely needs, and what would just be nice.

  • A must-have list keeps every search honest.

  • Share the must-have list in your own words, not in listing terms.

Most people start with a price. The smart ones start with a list.

Travis Wright here, with eXp Realty. When people tell me what they want, it's usually really specific. Four bedrooms and a big garage. A fenced yard for the dogs. A wood stove. Something newer, so they're not fixing things every weekend.

Those details matter, and they should drive your search. So here's a simple exercise. Make two lists. Your must-haves, the things you won't live without. And your nice-to-haves, the things you'd like but could give up for the right home.

That one step saves you a lot of time. You stop touring houses that were never going to work. And when the right one shows up, you'll know it fast. Kind of like ordering at your favorite restaurant. You don't need the menu anymore.

Reply with the word MUST, send me your must-haves, and I'll go find homes that check every box.
